Cornrows
Monday, February 16, 2009
Recently a friend of mine wanted me to do cornrows on her.
But unfortunately, I haven't found any time space.
Yeah, so this goes out to her.

Okay firstly.

The things you'll be needing:-

Right, so let's get started..

  1. Firstly, you need to have your style planned. Knowing how you want it to look like helps in getting your hair done in a right direction.
  2. Okay next, wet your hair. Not too wet though, just a 'lil damp would be good enough. Comb it to remove all major tangles.
  3. This is the fun part. Start to part a section of your hair of the path of the cornrows you wanna follow along. It could be curves, could be straight. Well, that's your style. Put aside the hairs you aren't braiding using the hair clips. Or rubber bands, whichever suits u better. Move the hairs that you don't need away from you so that you have a clear path to follow. Pick out a small section of hairs to start the braiding.
  4. Separate the hair that you have just picked out into 3 little strands. So now you'll have 3 strands, the left side, the middle, and the right side. If you've got an idea of how to braid, this will be really easy. So all you gotta do is to move the left side of the strand above the middle ones, and the right side of the strand right on top if these two. Next up is to have the middle part (from the beginning) right on top of the right one. So now you have the strands in reversed role and just do the same thing again. You've gotta do do at least two stitches before we cld get to the rest.
  5. Holding two outer strands aside, pick out a 'lil bit of hair on the path, and fully merge it with the middle strand so that it becomes a part of it, and you'll have 3 strands again. So with this, all you gotta do is braid a stitch again as in Part 4.
  6. Continue braiding and stitching, adding new strands each time. Repeat till there isn't any hair left to add on. Once it's over continue with the normal initial stitching.
  7. Secure the cornrows with beads, or hair bands or what ever you like.

Congrats! You've made one cornrow and now theres several more to go! Good Luck!

Yeah, it's actually quite simple to learn yet difficult to master. I'm not exactly a pro at this but if it helps, then great! Needs alot of patience.

A word of caution though. Since the weather is hot here in Sunny Singapore, this braiding is not recommended or you might get sunburn in your scalp. Ouch!! try to keep it damp a 'lil yea? =D

And the myths surrounding the braids that it can't be washed, are well, myths and untrue. Just use a stocking cap over it and use a shower massager to force out the water in the braids. Diluted shampoo with water mixed to wash, normal water ti rinse through. And let dry.

Simple ain't it!!
